Alquimia Humana
Alquimia Humana, the Detroit-based flamenco music and dance group, began collaborating in February 2000 and had their debut performance in May of that year. Originally a trio, the duo consists of guitarist Djeto Juncaj and dancer-guitarist Mary Laredo Herbeck. Juncaj is also a member of the Immigrant Suns, and is involved in other world-music projects in the Detroit area. Laredo studied for six years with La Dama Maria del Carmen and performed for 4 years with the Maria del Carmen Grupo Espana dance troupe. She also studied flamenco dance and guitar in Jerez de la Frontera, Spain, with maestro Simon el Rubio.
Included in the group’s repertoire are traditional flamenco rhythms; original compositions with Spanish and other world-music influences; the choreographies of La Dama Maria del Carmen, and new choreographies by Laredo. The duo performs for public and private events in and around the Detroit area.
